Today we will talk about the Spanish Cava Wine legacy in México; Freixenet
In 1978, a Catalana company, bought some land to establish a winery in the north of Tequisquiapan, in the Mexican state of Querétaro; a good land for vineyards of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Macabeu, among others. In 1984, they bottled their first following the traditional method of Champenoise. The 10th November (what a beautiful date hehehe, those that dont know me, it´s my birthday!) 1986 (not the year i was born…i wish tho!) was officially opened the winery of Freixenet in México, with a new name called “Finca Doña Dolores”
In 1977, the Catalán José Antonio Llaquet took the management of Freixenet de México as manager and enologist. With his wife as PR made this winery a successful one. Since then, the quality and name of their wines has been growing.
Now with the management of Jordi G. Fos, Enologist by profession and an experience of more than 18 years producing “Cava” and wines in Cataluña, the Alt Penedés zone, the winery is starting a new phase with renovated energy and many new ideas.
Jordi´s project is to keep producing wines with great quality and personality and adding to the existent line of wines, his new creations, like the Petillant Rosé ( a sparkling wine with 40gr/liter of sugar and the Dolores Chardonnay sparkling (highly recommended!) This wine surprises with it´s aromas of fruits and some touches of varietals flowers.
Doña Dolores, the red from 4 regions, a wine elaborated with grapes of 4 different states of México: Querétaro, Guanajuato, Aguascalientes and Zacatecas.
To this enologist, each wine is a story and why not? Each wine has it´s own unique personality, that makes it different from other wines, like their star product, Doña Dolores Brut Nature, a sparkling full of strength and character, the winner of many battles, like Napoleon Bonaparte!
The Petillant Rosé it´s a sensual wine, fruity with a very defined body, just like Marlyn Monroe!
Another important wine, Doña Dolores, the red from 4 regions, a wine elaborated with grapes of 4 different states of México: Querétaro, Guanajuato, Aguascalientes and Zacatecas. This makes the production much more complicated and gives it some qualities that make it really different than other Mexican wines, if we could relate this wine with a famous person, it would be, for sure, Emiliano Zapata, for it´s National character, a wine to pair perfectly with Mexican food.
In Freixenet de México, making good wines is not the only activity, they promote the culture and knowledge of wine, they offer guided tours and concerts all year like:
La Vendimia (August), a famous Mexican dinner each 15th September, the event of Art & Wine (November), the Christmas Concert (December), the Crazy Market (March), The Festival of Catalan Music and Food (April) and their very famous Paella Festival (May).
